For Media: SWeETY Camp at Brewer High School opens doors to high school girls interested in trade industry careers
RELEASE 15-014
What: The Decatur-Morgan County Chamber of Commerce will host the Decatur-Morgan Co. Summer Welding & Electrical Technology (SWeETy) Camp for 9th – 12th grade girls from area schools. The goal is to offer girls an opportunity to learn hands-on about technical skills that can lead to high-paying, satisfying careers in high growth industries. After first learning the importance of safety when working with electrical mechanisms and welding, the group learn many intricate parts that go into both welding & electrical technology, such as various welding processes and procedures, and electrical wiring parts and components.
The free camp features 18 students who will participate in instructor-led projects, field trips, and interact with women role models during industry sponsored lunches. This is the Chamber's 10th year hosting SWeETy Camp, and the third year the Decatur-Morgan camp was added to meet the growing demand for participation. Calhoun Community College hosted the first session on their Decatur campus July 6-9.
Go Build Alabama will be part of this year's program, highlighting the need for skilled workers in the trade industry. The Go Build Alabama initiative intends to educate young people on the value of learning a trade, dispel negative misconceptions about the construction industry and inspire them to consider building a career as a skilled construction tradesman. In Alabama, only a little more than 10 percent of the construction workforce is female, and for every four people who leave the trades, only one replacement is supplied by apprenticeship programs.
The week-long program is presented by Contractor Service & Fabrication Inc., of Decatur.
Who: Local students and instructors will be available to discuss their work during the camp.
When: Tuesday, July 21, noon-1 p.m.
Where: Brewer High School Welding Technology Vocational Center, 59 Eva Road, Somerville; off Hwy. 67 (click here for map)
For Media: Please contact Grant Thompson to RSVP for the event.
